Frontier Chemistry Project

This page will be for the frontier chemistry medical resource guide. The maladies will be listed and there will be several plants used to treat specific maladies. Along with how the part of plant is used and how it used, the chemical ingredient in the plant will also be listed. The plants will be from the eastern deciduous and the tall grass prairie region.

Justify the importance of identifying a plant/root correctly.

It is very important to identify a plant or root correctly because many plants look very similar. But they could be very useful and medicinal or very toxic and poisonous. You could potentially harm yourself for life or kill yourself by taking a medicine from a plant which was identified the wrong way.

Why would it be prudent to know a variety of species from other regions when dealing with natural medicines and food?

It would be prudent to know a variety of species from a variety of areas because injuries can happen anywhere and at anytime. You never know what can happen in life. You always have to be ready. Knowing the right plant to use from the right area can help treat injuries effectively and without major side-effects, Food will also be easier to judge because you will be able to tell what is poisonous and what is not.

Would it make a significant difference if you were traveling in different seasons? Why or why not.

Some plants bloom year round while some plants only bloom a month or a season. Knowing what plants bloom in what season can help u find the cure easier. Looking for a plant from the wrong season would be a waste of time and you would not be able to cure yourself.

As a scientist, why would it be significant to develop a relationship with local peoples about their plant habitat?

The local people have the most knowledge about the local flora and fauna. They may know additional information about some plants which may or may not be in a guidebook. The local people also have information on traditional uses of the local plants. This information can help the scientists do their research. They may even be able to design a new cure with the information from the local people.

If you were found without traditional medicines, would you trust your (or a reference texts) knowledge of local flora to treat illness or disease? Why or why not.

If I did not have traditional medicine, I would trust my knowledge of local flora to treat my disease. Although it is true that sometimes you can make the illness worse, there is a greater chance of curing it. I may not completely trust my knowledge but I do trust it to some extent. And if you just sit around doing nothing, the illness will just keep getting worse and worse.
